Introduction Operating form its' three quarries in North Wales, Alfred McAlpine Slate is the world's major producer of quality assured natural slate. The company's products are exported throughout the world from its quarries in Wales and North America and are recognised as amongst the finest building materials available. Alfred McAlpine Slate's head office is situated at the Penrhyn Quarry, the largest slate quarry in the world. Production of slate from the Penrhyn Quarry dates back to the 13th Century.

An Investor in People company, Alfred McAlpine Slate was the first natural slate company in the world to achieve ISO 9002 accreditation and to produce roofing slates satisfying BS 680. The company exercises stringent quality control measures at all stages of extraction and manufacture through to delivery. Alfred McAlpine Slate carefully selects material at the rock face for its best possible end use. The selected raw material is then cut out into processable blocks using automated laser guided saws. Only the best material is utilised for each product.

With this aim we operate a joint venture, the Slate Ecology Company, with Cynefin Environmental Consultants. Exceptionally high environmental performance standards have been achieved through development programmes that use natural materials and processes to recreate the unique character of each site. By working in partnership with specialist environmental consultants we have the experience and knowledge to ensure that the ecological setting and aesthetic qualities of each locality are restored. Alfred McAlpine Slate has been awarded ISO 14001 Environmental Management System. |
